As the fashion world continues to focus on diversity, we continue to see more models regardless of their color or size making history. In fact, US Elle Magazine features Angola-born model Maria Borges on their cover for the first time in twenty years.
This isn’t the first time the 24-year old model made history. In 2015, she was the first black model to ever walk in Victoria’s Secret fashion show, wearing her natural afro hair. Her career started in 2010 when she bagged second place at the Angolan edition of the contest Elite Model Look. Since then, she became a regular face on many runways and even in editorials like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Marie Claire.
She has also appeared in many campaign ads for big brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Bobbi Brown, Givenchy, L’Oreal, MAC, and Forever 21.
Elle last featured an African model in 1997. It was Sudanese model Alek Wek who was the magazine’s first black cover girl. Today, Maria hopes that this historic cover can inspire more women of different races and colors to never be afraid to try and achieve their dreams.
